About Black-eyed Susan
Black-eyed Susan, scientifically known as Rudbeckia hirta, is a vibrant and cheerful plant native to North America. Adored for its bright yellow petals surrounding a dark brown or black central cone, this perennial flower adds a splash of sunshine to gardens and landscapes. Often found in meadows, prairies, and along roadsides, Black-eyed Susans thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, requiring minimal maintenance.
Beyond its ornamental beauty, Black-eyed Susan holds ecological importance, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. These flowers can also tolerate drought and poor soils, making them resilient and adaptable. Symbolically, they are associated with encouragement and motivation, often seen as a harbinger of positive energy. Additionally, parts of the plant have been used traditionally for medicinal purposes, such as treating minor wounds and ailments. With its hardy nature and striking appearance, Black-eyed Susan remains a beloved favorite among gardeners and nature enthusiasts alike.
When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it – a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand – as a final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there is a clash between the two, it’s bad art.
