About Nasturtium
Nasturtium, scientifically known as Tropaeolum, is a vibrant and versatile plant cherished for its strikingly colorful flowers and edible leaves. Native to South America, this annual plant is easy to grow and thrives in poor soil conditions, making it a favorite among gardeners.
The flowers, ranging from fiery reds and oranges to soft yellows, not only add a splash of color to gardens but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. Nasturtium leaves have a peppery flavor, similar to watercress, and are often used in salads and garnishes.
Both the flowers and seeds are edible, with seeds sometimes pickled as a substitute for capers. Besides its culinary uses, Nasturtium is known for its medicinal properties, believed to have antibiotic and antibacterial benefits. Its robust growth and low maintenance make Nasturtium an excellent companion plant, deterring pests from more delicate crops like tomatoes and cucumbers.
We must remain as close to the flowers, the grass, and the butterflies as the child is who is not yet so much taller than they are. We adults, on the other hand, have outgrown them and have to lower ourselves to stoop down to them.
It seems to me that the grass hates us
when we confess our love for it. Whoever would partake of all good things must understand how to be small at times.Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900)
