About Hollyhocks
Hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) are quintessential cottage garden flowers known for their tall, stately spires that can reach up to 8 feet in height. These biennials and short-lived perennials originate from Asia and Europe and have become beloved in gardens worldwide.
Their large, showy flowers bloom in a wide array of colors, including shades of pink, red, yellow, and white, typically from mid-summer to early autumn.
Beyond their ornamental value, hollyhocks have historical significance in traditional medicine and folklore, being used for their emollient and soothing properties. These plants are relatively low-maintenance, attracting bees and butterflies, thus promoting biodiversity. Resistant to drought once established, hollyhocks symbolize ambition, which is fitting given their towering growth and impressive floral display.
I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty.
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986)
