About Catalpa

The catalpa tree, scientifically known as Catalpa speciosa or Catalpa bignonioides, is a deciduous tree celebrated for its striking features. With large heart-shaped leaves and showy, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, catalpas are a visual treat in any landscape. The flowers, typically white with purple and yellow spots, give way to long, slender seed pods, sometimes known as “cigar trees” due to their shape.

Native to North America, catalpa trees are hardy and adaptable, thriving in various soil conditions and climates. They can grow up to 40-60 feet tall, providing ample shade with their broad, spreading canopy. Beyond their ornamental value, catalpa trees have ecological benefits, attracting pollinators like bees and providing habitat for birds. Additionally, the wood of catalpa trees is resistant to rot and used for fence posts and other outdoor constructions. With their unique appearance and versatility, catalpa trees are a cherished addition to gardens and natural settings.

The flower is the poetry of reproduction.
It is an example of the eternal seductiveness of life.

Jean Giraudoux (1882-1944)
